My mind just blanked... what are these called?

I remember those things! I think they were simply called bodysuits or body-blouses. I was a teen model back then and I did a roller disco shoot I wore a deep eggplant red-purple bodysuit and a royal blue-purple wrap skirt and the colors looked as bad as you are imagining. These things were worn because of the super full and swirly skirts that were worn to discos and roller rinks and places like that, you would do a spin and you could show more to the world than you wanted.
