Why did God want Joshua to murder every single living creature in every village and city he defeated?

it's appalling and doesn't make any sense for an all loving god to do something like this. It's one of the hardest things I struggle with in my relationship with God. It seems like the Old Testament God was an extremely cruel elitist whereas the new testament God believed in peace and equality among people. WHY? Help me out with this please
